Market-first MRL mapping. Start with the buyer’s market. Map target pesticides to the correct commodity code and legal limits in EU, Japan, and the US. Defaults differ, and so does commodity grouping.

What are the current MRLs for edamame in the EU, Japan, and the US?
There isn’t one single “edamame MRL.” Limits apply per active substance and per commodity grouping.

Practical takeaway. Build a market matrix for your spray list. For each active, confirm the exact commodity classification, MRL or tolerance, and lab LOQ requirement. Don’t rely on generic “soybean” limits for edamame.
How do we set a pre-harvest interval that passes Japan’s Positive List?
Japan is strict. We work backward from the lowest limit across your target markets and use conservative decline assumptions.

Step 1. Pick only actives that have a Japan MRL for immature soy pods. Avoid anything with only mature soybean MRLs or none at all. As a rule, skip substances Japan has recently tightened or non-renewed elsewhere in the last 12 months.

Step 2. Estimate residue decline. If your supplier or literature shows a field half-life of, say, 3 days on legumes for a given active, and your initial deposit is 0.20 mg/kg, after 15 days you’re around 0.006 mg/kg. We then add a buffer of 20–30 percent time, so PHI becomes 18–21 days.

Step 3. Validate once per season. Do a small on-farm residue decline check with a trusted lab at 0, 7, 14, and 21 days after the last spray. Adjust PHI if your climate or variety slows dissipation.
We don’t gamble PHI. If your matrix says Japan is the tightest for a particular active at 0.01 mg/kg, set the entire farm PHI to clear Japan. Then everything else usually falls in line.
A 2026 action plan from field to freezer
Pre-season (6–8 weeks before first harvest)
- Build your market MRL matrix and get buyer sign-off. Confirm “in-pod” vs “shelled” classification for the SKU you’ll sell.
- Lock your spray program to actives with clear MRLs across EU, Japan, and the US. Pre-clear substitutions.
- Confirm a lab with ISO/IEC 17025 scope for pesticide residues in vegetables. Require LOQs at or below 0.01 mg/kg for the Japan default.
- Draft a sampling SOP: lot definition, composite sampling, seal procedures, and a hold-and-release rule.
21–30 days before harvest
- Freeze the spray schedule. Stop any actives that need longer PHIs. Replace with lower-risk options that have established short PHIs.
- Train field teams on traceability. Block, date of last spray, and anticipated harvest date must match lab COAs.
14–10 days before harvest
- Do a “screening sample” for high-risk actives at the lab if you’ve made late changes or had unexpected weather.
- Walk the field. Pull pods from different canopy levels. If disease pressure forces a spray, call your buyer and rework PHI. Don’t improvise.
3–5 days before harvest

Pre-harvest composite sample per lot. We take 1–2 kg, from at least 10 random spots, all around the block, including field edges. Keep a blind duplicate.

Send to lab under chain-of-custody. Hold the lot until results clear.
Harvest and processing
- Keep raw and post-blanch retains, both sealed. Record blanch parameters. IQF doesn’t change legal compliance, but buyers appreciate proof of process.
- Release for export only when the lab COA plus your traceability pack is complete and signed.
Practical takeaway. Hold-and-release with a pre-harvest COA is cheaper than a rejected container. We’ve saved weeks and tens of thousands by catching issues before the picker starts.
Does blanching or IQF reduce residues enough to pass MRLs?
Sometimes, but never plan on it. Blanching can reduce certain water-soluble or surface residues by 10–60 percent. Systemic residues inside the pod or seed may barely move. And regulators set MRLs on the raw commodity unless a processing factor is officially recognized, which many buyers won’t accept without prior agreement.
So we test raw pods. Treat any reduction from blanching as a bonus, not a safety net.
How many samples and what sample size for an edamame MRL test?
- Sample size. Most Indonesian labs ask for 1 kg minimum of edible pods. We send 1.5–2.0 kg to allow duplicates and reserve.
- Sampling scheme. Composite from at least 10 locations per lot, random and representative. Include edges and shaded zones. Don’t cherry-pick “clean” pods.
- Duplicates. One to lab, one sealed as counter-sample. If a result looks off, you’ll be glad you kept it.
Confirm exact requirements with your lab. For shelled edamame, align the sample matrix to seeds only and make sure your MRL mapping matches.
Which accredited labs in Indonesia can test edamame residues and issue a COA?

What matters more than the logo:
- ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation with scope covering “pesticide residues in vegetables/legumes.”
- LOQs at or below your tightest limit, typically 0.01 mg/kg.
- Coverage of difficult analytes. Dithiocarbamates (CS2 method), glyphosate/AMPA, and quats often require add-on methods.
- Turnaround times. Standard 3–5 business days. Expedited 48–72 hours is worth it before harvest.

Which documents do buyers expect to verify MRL compliance?
For IQF edamame, we bundle a compact but complete pack:
- Lab COA. Full analyte list with LOQs and results. Commodity clearly stated as “immature soybean pods (edamame)” or “shelled edamame,” aligned to the SKU.
- Spray and PHI records. Active, rate, date, block, and signed PHI calculation.
- Lot traceability map. Block-to-lot mapping, harvest date, and processing date.
- Processing records. Blanch time/temperature and IQF logs. Plus product spec sheet and label claims.
- Statement of conformity. Cite EU Reg. 396/2005, Japan Food Sanitation Act Positive List compliance, or US 40 CFR Part 180 as applicable.
Buyers move faster when the classification is crystal clear and the lab LOQs match market defaults.
What if a batch fails an MRL test before export?
- Hold and segregate immediately. Freeze the lot operationally but don’t ship.
- Validate with the duplicate sample. Consider a second ISO 17025 lab if results are borderline.
- Root cause. Check the block history, last spray, operator notes, and any misapplied rates or drift.
- Decide disposition. Divert to a market with a higher MRL only if fully legal. Otherwise, downgrade domestically or dispose. Don’t attempt “remediation.”
- Corrective action. Update PHI, retrain crews, and adjust your spray list for the remainder of the season. Document everything for the buyer.
Common mistakes we still see (and quick wins)
- Using an active without a Japan MRL for immature pods. Quick win. Replace it pre-season or extend PHI until it declines below 0.01 mg/kg.
- Lab LOQ above your market default. If Japan default is 0.01 mg/kg and lab LOQ is 0.02 mg/kg, you don’t have proof of compliance. Choose another method or lab.
- Weak sampling. Pulling only top-canopy or center-row pods biases results low. Composite across the whole block.
- Mixing blocks into one lot. Keep blocks separate if spray dates differ. It saves pain if only one block has a problem.
- Ignoring “add-on” analytes. Dithiocarbamates, glyphosate/AMPA, and quats regularly trip teams up. Include them.
