The good news is you don’t need a 50-page manual. You need a focused, risk-based testing plan that matches EU MRLs, uses the right methods, and produces a clean, credible COA on time. Here’s the blueprint we use for our own chilies.

The 2026 reality in a nutshell

  • EU MRLs are dynamic. Several active substances in Capsicum are under review and many legacy actives remain at the 0.01 mg/kg default. Chlorpyrifos and chlorpyrifos-methyl continue to sit at LOQ-level MRLs.
  • EU labs and buyers expect SANTE/11312-aligned methods with matrix-matched calibration and LOQs at or below the MRL. In practice, plan for 0.01 mg/kg LOQ across the board unless the EU MRL is lower or the analyte is a special case.
  • Multi-residue panels are not enough on their own. Polar pesticides like glyphosate, AMPA, fosetyl-Al/phosphonic acid, and chlorate/perchlorate require add-on methods.

In my experience, the exporters who win are the ones who test smart. They target the real risk analytes for chili, set the right LOQs, and sample often enough to catch outliers before the shipment leaves.

Which pesticide analytes should be on an EU-compliant chili panel in 2026?

Start with a broad LC-MS/MS and GC-MS/MS multi-residue screen that covers 250–500 actives commonly controlled in the EU. Then add targeted tests specific to chili and recent EU trends.

Mandatory core (multi-residue):

  • Organophosphates and carbamates that show up in Southeast Asia. Acephate, methamidophos, omethoate, dimethoate, profenofos, chlorpyrifos/chlorpyrifos-methyl, carbaryl, carbofuran including 3-OH metabolite.
  • Pyrethroids. Cypermethrin, lambda-cyhalothrin, permethrin, deltamethrin.

Critical add-ons not always in a standard multi-res screen:

  • Dithiocarbamates (as CS2). Separate method, typical LOQ around 0.05 mg/kg, check current EU MRL for Capsicum.
  • Polar pesticide panel. Glyphosate and AMPA. Fosetyl-Al and phosphonic acid. Chlorate and perchlorate. Ethephon where agronomy suggests use.

What’s interesting is how often the last group is missed. Three out of five COAs we’re asked to review from new suppliers don’t include phosphonic acid or chlorate. That’s a red flag for EU buyers.

How low should the LOQ be?

Short answer. 0.01 mg/kg for most analytes. That aligns with SANTE/11312 guidance and the EU default MRL. Go lower if the EU MRL for Capsicum is below 0.01 for that substance, or if your buyer’s spec demands it.

Practical tips we insist on with labs:

  • LOQ must be at or below the MRL. Don’t accept a 0.02 mg/kg LOQ when the MRL is 0.01.
  • Matrix-matched calibration for chili. Capsaicin and pigments create matrix effects. Without matrix-matching and isotope internal standards, you risk false results.
  • Report measurement uncertainty. EU buyers look for it, and it can matter if your result is close to the MRL.

How many samples per lot should I test before shipping?

We run chili as a high-risk commodity due to historic findings. A risk-based sampling plan that has worked for us and our partners:

  • Lot definition. A lot is the same variety from one day’s harvest per farm block, same packing run, up to 10 tons. If you blend farms, you create traceability and liability headaches.
  • Sample size. Collect 20–30 incremental samples of 200–300 g from across the lot. Combine into a 3–5 kg aggregate. Homogenize. Submit 1–2 kg to the lab. Retain a 1 kg duplicate, sealed, at 0–4°C for 30 days.
  • Frequency. For new farms or after any MRL exceedance. 100% of lots for the first 3 shipments, then reduce to 1-in-3 clean lots if the trend is consistently compliant. For steady farms with clean history. 1-in-3 lots, plus spot checks after rainfall or any spray change.
  • Timing. Do a pre-harvest screen 7–10 days before the first pick when possible. Then a pre-shipment verification on the actual packed lot. Residues can shift between first pick and packing. Step-by-step visual of chili residue sampling: field collection from multiple points, composite mixing and homogenization, then splitting with one portion placed into a chilled cooler as a retained duplicate.

This approach catches problems early and gives you a defensible record if inspectors ask questions later.

Are Indonesian ISO 17025 labs accepted by EU buyers?

Yes, if they are ISO/IEC 17025 accredited by KAN and listed under the ILAC MRA with scope covering pesticide residues for fruit and vegetables. We work with Indonesian labs meeting these criteria and have had COAs accepted by EU importers and customs.

Caveats from real experience:

  • Some EU importers still require confirmation by an EU lab for first-time suppliers or for specific analytes. Budget time for that.

  • Add-ons. Dithiocarbamates as CS2. 3–5 working days, IDR 600k–1.2m. Polar pesticide panel (glyphosate/AMPA, fosetyl-Al/phosphonic acid, chlorate/perchlorate). 5–7 days, IDR 1.2–2.5m.

How do I check the current EU MRL for Capsicum before booking tests?

Do this every time you renew your panel.

  1. Open the EU Pesticides Database and go to MRLs.

  4. Note the MRL and footnotes for Capsicum. Watch for changes in force and transitional measures.

What if a pesticide exceeds the MRL?

We treat this like an incident. Fast, structured, and with evidence.

  • Freeze the lot. Hold shipment. Notify the buyer with preliminary findings and the corrective path.
  • Verify. Send the retained sample to a second ISO 17025 lab for confirmation. If you used a composite, consider re-sampling to rule out hot spots.
